Kalamazoo pulls out all the stops to welcome the merry month of June with over a dozen reasons to pack a bag for a weekend celebration. From Art Hop to Art Fair to Arts Garage Sale to Book Sale to a not so traditional DoDah Parade to festivals and car shows and films – most free or nearly so –
Art Hop: June 4, 5 - 9 pm; Hours vary by location. A free event that features new art exhibits in a fun, casual atmosphere. Numerous galleries and businesses host a variety of artwork, and you can hop around from one exhibit to the other. You also have the opportunity to meet the artist. KIA Art Fair: June 4 - 5, 2010, Fri. 5 - 9 pm; Sat. 9 am - 5 pm in Bronson Park. Over 200 outstanding artists from across the country make Michigan's oldest juried art fair the perfect way to kick off the summer season. You'll find unique jewelry, ceramics, glass, decor, textiles, metal and more. There is something for everyone with kids' art yard, food vendors, entertainment, face painting and more. Cost: Free KIA Garage Sale; June 4 - 5, 2010, Fri. 5 - 10 pm; Sat. 9 am - 5 pm at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts is hosting a Garage Sale during Art Fair in the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts Galleries. Come shop from a treasure trove of housewares, clothing, jewelry and more! Cost: Free Art on the Mall: June 4 - 5, 2010, 12 - 9 pm on the Kalamazoo Mall, Michigan to Lovell. Artists will sell original works of art and fine crafts. From jewelry to pottery, unique garden art to incredible sculptures, this event produces the best shopping in Kalamazoo. Cost: Free Library Book sale: June 4 - 5, 2010, Fri. 5-10 pm; Sat. 9 am - 5 pm at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. The KIA Library will be selling gently used art books and art book plates during the KIA Garage Sale in the KIA Galleries during Art Fair. Cost: Free Saniwax Gallery: Featuring Patrick Smith: June 4 - 25, 2010, Thursday-Saturday 12:00-5:00pm in the Park Trades Center, Suite 209. "Woodwork 2k-Ten. Wood and Not-Wood" featuring eclectic recycled woods, glass, and stone. Cost: Free DoDah Parade: Theatre in the Streets June 5, 2010, 11 am - 12 pm in Downtown Kalamazoo. The official parody of anything and everything. This is the one time where silly and satire rule the streets of downtown Kalamazoo. Join over 80 businesses, nonprofit organizations, and community individuals as we enjoy the absurd, the goofy, and the downright un-political nature of a parody. Come join us for the 27th annual Do-Dah Parade! Cost: Free Classic Car Club of America GRAND CLASSIC: June 5, 2010, 9 am - 4 pm at the Gilmore Car Museum.  The Classic Car Club of America features the "Grand Classic" here at the Gilmore. These are the premier National car shows of the CCCA held in different regions annually. This show is open to all "Classic" cars and utilizes CCCA judging standards that are now used by all of the major concourse shows. Cost: Adults $10, Children 12 & under $6 Dionysus Greek fest: June 3 - 5, 2010, Thur. 11 am - 10 pm; Fri. & Sat. 11 am - 1 am at the Arcadia Creek Festival Place. Celebrate everything Greek with this annual event. There is a full slate of food, song and dance planned. Cost: Free before 4 pm; Thurs. 4 - 10 is $5; Fri. & Sat. 4 - 7 pm is $5 after 7 pm $10 Reveries and Nightmares: June 5, 2010, 8pm at the Dalton Theater with the Philharmonia. Honegger, Ravel and Berlioz. Cost: $5, $2 students Smoke on the Water Regatta: June 5 - 6, 2010, 10:30 am - 5 pm - Weather permitting at the Fort Custer State Rec. Area, Augusta. For the third consecutive year, the Michigan Hydroplane Racing Association (MHRA) will bring outboard powerboat racing to the shores of Eagle Lake at Fort Custer Recreation Area in Augusta. Racers from across the Midwest will bring their equipment to run for the checkered flag with speeds ranging from 40 miles per hour in the Juneior class up to 80+ miles per hour in the fastest classes of Stock Outboard racing. Cost: Event is free but there is a charge for park admission. Michigan Horse Drawn Vehicles Association: June 5 - 6, 2010. Gates open at 9 am at the Kalamazoo County Expo Center & Fairground. Blue Ribbon Clinic & Horse Show for all levels of competitors. Cost: Free W.K. Kellogg Manor Tours: June 6, 2010, noon to 5pm at the Kellogg Manor House.  Step back in time during a tour of the W.K. Kellogg Manor House located on picturesque Gull Lake near Hickory Corners. Built in 1925-26, the Kellogg Manor House is a classic example of Tudor Revival architecture with leaded glass bay windows, quarter-sawn oak coffered ceiling, a hand carved stairway, and beautiful Rookwood tile fireplaces and bathrooms. Sited 110 feet above Gull lake, this 32 acre estate includes a carriage house, with chauffeur's cottage, a boathouse, an authentic Dutch windmill, a lakeside pagoda and several beautiful gardens. Cost: $5 Adults, $4 Seniors and student (6-18), 5 and under are free Horatio's Drive: America's First Road Trip: June 6, 2010, 2pm at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum. Get set for an adventure that marked a new era in America! Film-maker Ken Burns presents the hilarious 1903 saga of the first transcontinental automobile trip. On a visionary whim and a $50 bet, Dr. Horatio Nelson Jackson became the first person to drive an automobile across the continent. His arrival in New York City, after every imaginable breakdown and delay, proved that the "horseless carriage" really did have a future. Cost: Free        |
